"How much does SEO cost?" is usually the first question a business owner asks, and the answers they get are confusing. One agency quotes ₹8,000 a month. Another quotes ₹80,000. Both say they do SEO.

This guide explains the real SEO cost in India in 2026, what each price level usually includes, what drives the cost up or down, and how to tell a fair proposal from a bad one. It is part of our complete SEO guide for businesses.

Typical SEO pricing in India

These ranges reflect what we commonly see in the Indian market for monthly retainers. Your quote will depend on your website, your competition and your goals.

Provider type Typical monthly range Suited for
Freelancer, basic package ₹8,000 to ₹20,000 Very small local businesses with low competition
Small agency or senior freelancer ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 Local and regional businesses, small ecommerce stores
Established agency ₹50,000 to ₹1,50,000 Competitive categories, larger websites, national reach
Enterprise or international SEO ₹1,50,000 and above Large catalogues, multiple countries, complex technical setups

Many agencies also charge a one time setup fee for the initial audit, keyword research and technical fixes. This can range from a few thousand rupees to the equivalent of one month's retainer.

What you should get at each level

Price matters less than what is included. A good SEO package at any level should be clear about deliverables.

At the lower end, expect basic on page optimisation, Google Business Profile management, a small number of backlinks and a simple monthly report. This can work for a local business in a low competition area.

In the middle range, expect a technical audit, keyword research and mapping, ongoing on page work, two to four content pieces a month, regular link building and reporting with real metrics from Google Analytics 4 and Search Console.

At the higher end, expect everything above plus deeper technical work, larger content programmes, digital PR, conversion optimisation, AI search visibility and a senior strategist accountable for results.

We explain what a complete scope of work should look like in our SEO audit checklist, which is the same checklist we use before quoting.

What drives SEO cost up or down

Competition. Ranking a clinic in a small town is very different from ranking an ecommerce store against national brands. More competition means more content and more authority building.

Website size. A 10 page service website and a 5,000 product store need very different amounts of work.

Starting point. A site with technical problems, thin content and no links needs more foundation work than a healthy site.

Geography. Local SEO for one city costs less than national SEO, which costs less than international SEO across several countries. Our local SEO services are often the most cost effective starting point for location based businesses.

Content volume. Content is usually the largest ongoing cost. Four well researched articles a month cost more than one.

AI search visibility. Structured data, answer ready content and entity work add scope, but they increasingly matter. Our AI SEO guide explains why.

Red flags in SEO proposals

Guaranteed rankings. Nobody controls Google's results. Google's own guidance warns against providers who guarantee a number one ranking.

Hundreds of backlinks for a low price. Cheap bulk links are usually low quality or spammy, and they can harm your site. See our link building guide for what safe link building looks like.

No access to your own accounts. Your Google Analytics, Search Console and website should stay in your name. If an agency will not give you access, walk away.

Vague deliverables. "We will optimise your website" is not a scope of work. Ask exactly what will be done each month.

Reports without business metrics. Rankings alone are not results. Ask how leads and revenue will be tracked.

Lock in contracts with no exit. A reasonable minimum term is normal, since SEO takes time, but you should be able to leave with all your data and content.

Is cheap SEO worth it?

Sometimes, for a small local business in a low competition niche. But in most cases, the cheapest packages do the minimum: a few meta tags, some directory submissions and a report. That rarely moves a business forward.

A better question than "how cheap can I get SEO" is "what would it be worth if this worked?" If one new client is worth ₹50,000 to your business, an SEO programme that brings in two or three a month pays for itself quickly. Our guide on how long SEO takes helps set realistic expectations on when that happens.

How to compare SEO quotes

Put every proposal side by side and check:

  1. What is delivered each month, in numbers: pages optimised, articles written, links built
  2. Who does the work, a senior specialist or a junior team
  3. What is measured, and how often you get reports
  4. Who owns the accounts and content
  5. Minimum term and exit terms
  6. Relevant results in your industry, with real data

How BrandMates Studio prices SEO

We quote after a discovery call, never before we understand the business. Every engagement starts with a diagnostic covering technical SEO, content, competitors and AI search visibility, followed by a monthly retainer with a fixed scope of work and monthly reporting from Google Analytics 4 and Search Console.

On one Shopify store, that process took organic search users from 172 to 3,286 a month, comparing August 2026 with February 2026. See the Shopify SEO case study, explore our SEO services or request a free SEO audit to get a quote based on your actual site.

Frequently asked questions

For a small or medium business, most monthly SEO retainers in India fall between ₹15,000 and ₹50,000. Very basic packages start lower, and competitive or international SEO costs more. The right budget depends on your competition and goals.

Prices reflect the amount of work, the experience of the people doing it and the competitiveness of your market. A package that includes technical fixes, regular content and quality link building costs more than one that only adjusts meta tags.

A one time audit and set of fixes can deliver a meaningful improvement, especially on a site with technical problems. But rankings depend on ongoing content and authority, and competitors keep working, so most businesses see the strongest results from continuous SEO.

A minimum of three to six months is common, because SEO results take time to build. Avoid contracts that lock you in for a year with no exit, and make sure you keep full access to your accounts and content.

Some providers offer performance based pricing, but it often encourages shortcuts that target easy, low value keywords. A clear scope of work with transparent reporting is usually a safer arrangement.
